The ways to connect with friends these days have certainly changed. I have been trying to navigate through these social networks without much finesse. All I can say is this friendship thing has certainly evolved to different dynamics, from having thousands of friends in your “network” to stalking and creeping on Facebook! Everyday is something new.
The truth is I may have many friends, but I can only name a few who are truly my kindred spirits or spiritual friends. You might ask what kind of friends are they? To explain my self, I’d like to use Aelred words:
“A human being without a friend is like a beast: for he lacks someone with whom he can share his joy in prosperity and his sadness in adversity, to whom he may unburden his mind when he is preoccupied, with whom he may talk whenever he has had a particularly sublime or illuminating insight…That person is completely alone who has no friend.”
A spiritual friend according to this quote is someone who can help you think clearly and see your world the way it is. She is someone who is not afraid to tell you the reality when you don’t even know what is wrong with you. When you don’t have a spiritual friend you are like a beast: competitive, reckless and consumed. We all need spiritual friends to care about our souls; confront our sins; give us joy, encouragement and refreshment. Most of all someone who is not afraid to pierce us with God’s word when needed.
I am blessed to have a few spiritual friends. They know exactly when I am in need and encourage me. They bring me back to the Lord when I wander away. They pick me up and carry me when I can no longer stand on my own. Just not too long I heard from one, who in the middle of her problems sent me a concerned note. She was worried about me as she noticed I had not written in my blog for a while. Those few words in her email had refreshed, comforted me and conveyed unspoken love at a time of desolation.
God loves me, and He does not want me to wander around like a headless beast, therefore He has given me spiritual friends.
“Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.” Philemon 1:7
