…..he ‘s back !!
It started with this quiet, looming presence in my bedroom in the wee hours of the morning. It woke me up from a deep slumber and I could sense her as she approached my room. It was one of those things which made me jumped out of my skin..
“Mom, I heard something in the attic, and I am not dreaming!”
Normally when I am wide awake, I am more than please to know that my grown up child still thinks that I am the dragon slayer in the house, but I definitely don’t feel like one in the middle of the night. In my semi consciousness I managed to drag my body across the hallway and stood there and listened…..there it was: it started out as a slight thump on the ceiling but I could hear it unmistakably, the sound of claws above me.
… He is back.. Rascal the Raccoon has made its way back again for his annual visit!
When it was light enough I went outside to inspect the roof, I noticed the same old hole in the asphalt under the shingles. The last time I saw it was on April 7, 2011 ( oh, I remembered it well !). Rascal had once again punched a big hole and made his way into the attic to answer the call of nature…. to find a home for Mrs. Rascal and the little ones !
After a string of phone calls I finally got hold of the pest control guy who assured me he would come by to fix the problem.
“But this is the second time he came ! Why did he pick our house ?”
“Well, he found a weakness in your house, that’s why he came back. ”
He. Found. A. Weakness….
Those words stuck with me for the rest of the day, and they don’t sit well.
To our relief, Pest Guy finally came and did a thorough and better job than the guy last year. He checked to make sure the critter is no longer there, and then he deodorized the space, sealed the hole and to make sure that Rascal cannot get back again, he put a steel fence over the area.
He has strengthened the weakness.
God often has a way of using these moments to speak into my life. The question for the day was “What are the weaknesses in my life?” What are the entry points of my bad and sinful habits, the ones I thought I had gotten rid of only to find them sneaking back when I am unaware. This incident with Rascal taught me to get rid of a sinful habit requires more than just changing one’s way, it takes a strong defense against the things of the world especially in areas where I am weak and vulnerable.
As I went through the daily routine, a verse came to my mind:
