Immediately after my first bear sighting, I went and got a bear bell. I’ve heard about these animals in our neighborhood but never thought too much about them until that afternoon when one of them got too close for comfort. Ever since then Jaden has been wearing this yellow bell on his harness, I figure it is better on him than on me. I read that when bears hear noses they will avoid confrontation and will go the other way.
It took Jaden a while to warm up to his new accessory. But by now when he sees it, he understands it is time for him to go for his walk. My neighbors also recognized us by the sound of the bell. When the weather is nice, as soon we walk out of the house, the kids will come over to pat Jaden and to talk to me. Jaden loves his young friends and greets every kid with an enthusiastic lick on the faces. He is now affectionately known as the ” Jingle Dog”.
Now that the weather is colder, I see less of the kids as they stay inside their houses. But the other day as I turned down the main road, I saw a mom with her toddler who was visibly excited to see us. The mom said “we can hear you from inside the house , and every time when you walk by my baby will stop whatever she is doing and says ‘doggie’ !” Well, what do you know? This bell which is to repel bears also manages to get attention from the human folks.
“She got rings and her fingers, and bells on her toes, she makes music wherever she goes !”
This nursery rhyme fits Jaden, he does wear the bell well and as he swaggers down the road he makes sweet music which apparently attracts people around him.
Which led to one question……what kind of music am I making?
Pleasant, soothing music or annoying, agitating sound ?
Yesterday I read this blog about Christians who drove others away. This man had “steadfastly” refused to go to church because of those who he called the ” hippy critts” , the ones who like to talk about God’s grace, but then turned it all back to people. This man had stayed away from church until he finally met someone who showed him Jesus and lived the grace of Christ. It was ultimately his friend’s lifestyle which drew him back to Jesus.
What kind of music am I making? Ones which attract people to Him, or drive them away.
