What I learned today…..
I attended a leadership conference today and came home challenged and motivated. Of all the things I have learned, I found Dr. Henry Cloud’s session on ” The Evil, The Foolish, The Wise” most insightful. According to Dr. Cloud, the ways to identify them is in the way truth is handled:
For the wise when the truth comes to them they will change and adjust themselves according to the reality. But the fool will try to change the truth instead of themselves.
The wise will thank you for revealing and bringing the truth to their attention. On the other hand the fools will make excuses, minimize their situation, and even shoot the messenger. They will never admit that they are at fault, refuse to take ownership, get angry and demand to have meeting after meetings.
Once you have identify who they are, Dr. Cloud suggests the different strategies for dealing with them:
With the wise you talk to them and keep them appropriately challenged. However you do not confront or correct fools because they are allergic to reality and talking is useless. Instead you set limits to protect the ones you are leading and give choices and lay down specific consequences
Finally with evil people the only way to deal with them is to warn them twice and have nothing to do with them because when faced with the truth they will threaten destruction and inflict pain on others.
So what is my take on this?
Sometimes we get so involved in fixing problems and trying to change the person that we inadvertently get drained and distracted from our mission. We are unable to change people for only God can. The only thing is to do our part and leave the rest in His hands.
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My Statutes, and ye shall keep My Judgments, and do them… Without Me ye can do nothing” (Ezekiel 36:26-27; John 15:5).
