You Can Do It!

It does not matter who you are, a mom with growing teens; parents coping with an empty nest; a young person looking for employment; a confused man fighting off temptation…we all need one thing: encouragement.

As Celeste Holm said “We live by encouragement and die without it – slowly, sadly, angrily”. We all need cheerleaders in our lives to help us take that one extra step and to push a little harder, just as that Beatles song goes ” I get by with a little help from my friends”.

From my observation and experiences, I found usually women will admit they need encouragement more so than men, I guess we women are more relational and emotional than the other sex. But regardless whether one admits it or not, we are all sheep in the eyes of God and we need each other in order to thrive and grow.

I have met a few “Barnabas” along my journey and sometimes I found them in the most unexpected people. A hug; a few kind words, a shared story, a verse or two can really pick me up.  As I have experienced encouragement, I know I need to be an encourager as well and that is to be sensitive to the people around me and be ready and willing when the need arises.

One thing I have learned  is that I am my most influential encourager, now it might sound a bit conceited but let me put it this way: I might have received encouragement from people around me but  ultimately is my attitude that will either lift me up or sink me deeper in whatever dire situation I am in. I cannot be helped if I refused help, it is all about choices.

As I am writing this I am thinking a few people in my life who need to be encouraged, I pray that they will  hold tight on to the hope we have been given, and keep on pressing towards the goal  I hope they will remember  as in Hebrews 12:1 that there are people  who  have blazed the way and other people who are cheering us on. Most importantly we need to keep our eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in.

Finally I pray that all of us with never allowed ourselves to be taken over by discouragement.

I Refuse to Be Discouraged!

I refuse to be discouraged, To be sad, or to cry;
I refuse to be downhearted, And here’s the reason why…

I have a God who’s mighty, Who’s sovereign and supreme;
I have a God who loves me, and I am on His team.

He is all wise and powerful, Jesus is His name;
Though everything is changeable, my God remains the same.

My God knows all that’s happening; beginning to the end,
His presence is my comfort, He is my dearest friend.

When sickness comes to weaken me, to bring my head down low,
I call upon my mighty God; Into His arms I go.

When circumstances threaten to rob me from my peace;
He draws me close unto His breast, Where all my strivings cease.

And when my heart melts within me, and weakness takes control;
He gathers me into His arms, He soothes my heart and soul.

The great “I AM” is with me, my life is in His hand,
The “Son of the Lord” is my hope, it’s in His strength I stand.

I refuse to be defeated, my eyes are on my God;
He has promised to be with me, as through this life I trod.

I’m looking past all my circumstances, o Heaven’s throne above;
My prayers have reached the heart of God, I’m resting in His love.

I give God thanks in everything, my eyes are on His face;
The battle’s His, the victory is mine; He’ll help me win the race.
