The Circle of Life
This song has been playing in my head all night long, and I am feelin’ it !
I can still remember her big glasses and big permed hair. She was only a kid wanting to grow up fast, the one who liked to talk incessantly in class , and at times kept us on our toes by giving us a little grief. Now this young girl is all grown up ,married with two babies of her own.
Last week she told me that she has been trying to teach her toddler how to pray, the kind of prayer that goes beyond “thank-you-Lord-for-the-food”. So one night the little tyke started to reel off things he was thankful of : mommy; daddy; baby; poh poh ( grandma); and yes, poh poh Joan too. ( That is moi!!). The young mom told me as she looked into my eyes ” You were prayed for.” Now if that did not make this old crusty woman soften up, I don’t know what will.
I have to tell you, my dear girl, that this little prayer has lifted me up all week. It makes me smile every time I thought of it.
Life has come around in a full circle.
I used to surprise my girls with these little treats when they were young, at the age when little toys, cookies or a trip to the golden arc would excite them. I enjoyed doing it because I like to see their faces lit up with joy, and I love to hear their voices of delight. It is a mom’s way of showing love to her chickadees. I still do that, ( that is if I can afford to surprise them), and every time when I can bring a smile to their beautiful faces, I am very happy.
Last night as I picked up my grown up child from the station, the first thing she said “I got a surprise for you!!” And as we crawled back home through the late night construction, she whipped out this lovely package from her handbag, and it is my beloved macaroons!! She really made my day, and the long drive home tolerable if not pleasant.
Life certainly has come around in a full circle.
At one point, when you are no longer the driver but the passenger, and when the car suddenly brakes and your child reaches out with her arm to brace you from the impact, you know life has come around in a full circle.
Your child is taking care of you.
She becomes the mom, and you become the child.
” Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift?
the fruit of the womb his generous legacy?
Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows
are the children of a vigorous youth.
Oh, how blessed are you parents,
with your quivers full of children! “
Psalm 127:3-5 ( The Message)
